    The Dog Shelter

Today we got up and took an hour-long taxi to volunteer at a dog shelter for the day. When we arrived the workers were having lunch so we were shown to an area with a small group of dogs but we could see many, there were over 300 dogs and 11 cats in the big rural shelter. In the small group of dogs we met most of them were really friendly and some were shy but after some time most of them got used to us. I found it really interesting to listen to the stories behind the history of each dog and the history of the shelter. There was one dog that was paralysed after it was hit by a car,  the Australian shelter owner felt euthanasia would be the kindest treatment for it. However,  the staff and the the original owner of the dog disagree because in Buddhism they believe that euthanasia is not right which leads to an interesting moral debate.

We helped groom some dogs and brushed dirt out from under their shelter. The dogs were mostly friendly and some hopefully going to be adopted. After that we went to clean the cat area where I fixed the frame they would climb while everyone else cleaned. Overall I really enjoyed meeting all the dogs and it felt good to support the workers there.
