During our stay at Luang Prabang we went to visit the Tat Kuang Si waterfalls which are beautiful blue waterfalls made from limestone cliffs. Limestone is a type of sedimentary rock made from tons and tons of crushed up crustaceans like lobsters, crabs and barnacles. In limestone there is a type of chemical called calcium carbonate which makes the water really blue but I looked it up and it could also make the water red, orange or green too! I don’t think I would have wanted to go in the water if it was one of those colours.
Before we got to the waterfalls there was a moon and sun bear sanctuary for bears that had been rescued from farms where they lived in really small cages. At the farms they take the Bear’s bile to make traditional medicine. The cages were so small that bears wouldn’t be able to stand up and stretch so they had a terrible quality of life (there was an example of cage for us to see). The bears at the sanctuary looked happy and healthy though.
The waterfalls were in the middle of a jungle and high up on a mountain so there were lots of insects including female Golden Orb Weavers which have bodies around 4-5 cm long (not including their long legs) however the males are only 0.6 cm! They were quite scary – I probably would have screamed if I’d walked into a web.
At the waterfalls there were lots of pools and you could swim in 4 of them. My favourite one had a tree that you could climb and jump off into the water. It was magical being in such a beautiful place in the middle of a jungle.
